Practical advice from our experienced mechanics
Our team has decades of combined experience keeping vehicles running in southwest Colorado. Here are the maintenance basics every vehicle owner should know.
Motor oil: Regular changes prevent sludge and overheating. This is the single most important maintenance item for your engine's longevity.
Brake fluid: Replace per your owner's manual schedule. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which can reduce braking performance.
Coolant: Prevents overheating and freezing — check regularly. This is especially important in Colorado where temperatures swing from summer heat to winter cold.
Brakes: Replace pads at 1/4 inch or less remaining. Listen for squealing or grinding — those are warning signs that your pads are wearing thin.
Battery: Typical lifespan is 2–6 years. Keep terminals clean and check charge regularly, especially in cold weather when batteries work hardest.
Headlights: Replace in pairs for even illumination. If one bulb has burned out, the other is likely close behind.
Air filters: Engine filter every 15,000–30,000 miles. Cabin filter for passenger comfort — especially important during allergy season and dusty conditions.
Oil filters: Follow your manual's schedule. We replace the oil filter with every oil change service.
Tire rotation: Rotate tires regularly for even wear. We recommend combining this with your brake inspection every 6 months.
Alignment: Check alignment if your vehicle pulls to one side or you notice uneven tread wear. Colorado's rough roads and potholes can knock your alignment out.
Minimize stop-and-go driving to reduce wear on brakes, transmission, and engine. Smooth, consistent driving extends the life of your brake pads, reduces transmission stress, and improves fuel economy.
